Steven Vine

Steven Vine was living a 'normal' life like everyone else; in a long term relationship, working hard, travelling and having fun…too much fun, until July 22, 2016 when his life changed dramatically.

He suffered a AAA (Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm). His mortality rate for surviving this catastrophe was 1%. He woke up after a 28 day coma with 100% vision loss, right leg amputated above the knee and an abdominal ostomy,   among other disabilities. He had a long road to recovery in his new life. Four years into living with his disabilities, and a negative experience in assisted living, he was at Royal Columbian Hospital recovering from a surgery when the hospital informed him that he was being discharged–with two options: a halfway house or the street.

He is currently striving and thriving in an independent apartment with the support of BC Housing and The Right Fit; as well as the CSIL program through IFRC.

Steven Vine menait une vie « normale » comme les autres : il entretenait une relation à long terme, travaillait fort, voyageait et s’amusait… avec excès. Le 22 juin 2016, sa vie a entièrement basculé.

Il a alors subi un anévrisme de l’aorte abdominale (AAA). La probabilité qu’il survive à cet épisode catastrophique était de 1 %. Quand il s’est réveillé après un coma de 28 jours, il avait entièrement perdu la vue, sa jambe droite avait été amputée à la hauteur du genou et il avait subi une stomie abdominale. Le chemin vers le rétablissement s’annonçait long et une nouvelle vie commençait. Après quatre années de vie en situation de handicap et une expérience négative des résidences services, il se rétablissait d’une intervention chirurgicale à l’hôpital Royal Columbian lorsqu’on lui a annoncé qu’il obtenait son congé et qu’il disposait de deux options : un foyer de transition ou la rue. 

À l’heure actuelle, il mène une vie épanouie dans un appartement indépendant avec l’aide de BC Housing et The Right Fit, ainsi que du programme Choice in Supports for Independent Living (CSIL), par l’intermédiaire de l’Individualized Funding Resource Centre (IFRC) Society.
